THIS WAS A DIFFICULT LESSON

When Selma left home in the morning, her family expected her to return home by nightfall as usual. But by 6pm she had neither arrived nor called to explain her apparent delay in coming back. Then her colleagues called her sister Martha that Selma had been admitted into emergency care that morning!

Because Selma is very close to me, I was informed that very night about her situation. I was advised not to visit or call her until her doctors gave permission. You can imagine how I spent that night, the Christian that I am! I was wide awake the greater part of the night.

I spent the time praying for full and permanent recovery for Selma. I sang hymns about faith and healing. I prayed in words that tumbled out of my heart. And I expressed my gratitude and praise to the Lord for the healing I believed he would grant my Selma.

That first night Selma spent in hospital, my faith was sometimes strong, sometimes weak or non- existent. And when it was in the non- existent mode, I was fearful for the health of my loved one.

The following days, I continued praying for her healing. Family and friends also prayed for her recovery. Her condition improved remarkably each day. You can imagine my relief and joy when Selma was discharged from hospital four days later. I was full of gratitude and praise to the Lord. In addition, I was thankful to the doctors who gave her the best possible treatment.

Two of the Bible verses I relied on were these:

* 2 Timothy 1:7 ( New Living Translation)

For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love and self- discipline.

* Matthew 8: 14-15 ( New Living Translation)

When Jesus arrived at Peter’s house, Peter’s mother- in-law was sick with a high fever. But when Jesus touched her hand, the fever left her.Then she got up and prepared a meal for him.

From this experience, I realized it is important and useful to know relevant Bible verses and hymns for various situations. And to be ready to pray at all times. Otherwise fear may cripple you in times of crises and problems. Then you will lose your ability to focus on the situation and take the right action.

I also determined to treasure family and friends all the more. In addition, I desired to spend more time with them and to maintain my good relations with them. Besides, disagreements and offenses hardly matter in critical situations like this one. It is more important to enjoy the company of family and friends whenever possible.
